Cameroon gets control of region

From Times Wire Reports

Nigeria handed control of the oil-rich Bakassi peninsula to its neighbor Cameroon, despite fears that the move would provoke attacks by local armed groups.

The Nigerian government agreed two years ago to hand over Bakassi, in line with a 2002 International Court of Justice order, but violence, political disputes and legal skirmishes delayed the transfer. About 50 people have been killed in border clashes in the last year.

Security sources say several unrelated armed groups in Bakassi are fighting for independence, money, housing and other causes.
