WBA orders a panel to review Holyfield bout

The World Boxing Assn. is reviewing Nikolai Valuev’s win over Evander Holyfield by majority decision in a Dec. 20 heavyweight title bout.

The organization says in a statement on its website dated Monday that it had ordered a panel of judges to study the video of the fight.

The WBA says it “always cares about and respects the fans’ and the media’s opinion.”

One judge scored the bout a draw and the others had Valuev winning, 116-112 and 115-114.

Bradley sets camp roster

U.S. men’s Coach Bob Bradley has selected 25 players to the training camp roster that will begin workouts Sunday at the team’s national training center in Carson.

The group will begin preparing for its first game of 2009, an exhibition against Sweden on Jan. 24 at the Home Depot Center.

Included are Sacha Kljestan and Jonathan Bornstein of Chivas USA, Sean Franklin of the Galaxy, the Columbus Crew’s Chad Marshall of Riverside and Robbie Rogers of Huntington Beach, and the Chicago Fire’s John Thorrington, who is from Palos Verdes. Also on the roster is Danny Califf of Orange, who plays for FC Midtjylland in Denmark.

U.S. junior team remains unbeaten

The United States coasted into the world junior championship playoffs with a 12-0 victory over Kazakhstan at Ottawa, Canada. The U.S. will play Canada in a matchup of 3-0-0 teams today with the top spot in Group A on the line.

Aaron Palushaj led the U.S. with two goals and two assists. Colin Wilson had two goals, and James van Riemsdyk and Ian Cole each had a goal and two assists. Matt Rust, Mitch Wahl, Drayson Bowman, Mike Hoeffel, Jimmy Hayes and Danny Kristo had the other U.S. goals.

Richardson and Davis win titles

Heather Richardson and Shani Davis won their first sprint national titles on the final day of the U.S. Long Track Speedskating National Championships at West Allis, Wis. Richardson repeated Monday’s sweep in the 500- and 1,000-meter races. Davis swept the 1,000 and was second in the 500 both days. . . . Danny Villa, 44, a former New England Patriots lineman, was ordered held on $100,000 cash bail after he was charged with raping a 15-year-old girl whose father allegedly found hundreds of text messages she received from the man. . . . Retired NFL receiver Andre Rison was arrested and cited for public intoxication after an early-morning disturbance at a San Antonio hotel. . . . Bulgarian sprinter Tezdjan Naimova received a two-year suspension for a doping offense.
