The features they long for

Builders and contractors, take note: Great-looking kitchens, ample storage, large master bedrooms, personalized spaces and spacious laundry rooms top the list of features new-home buyers and remodelers want, according to a study conducted last month.

The Better Homes and Gardens survey of 2,000 female participants reveals a strong desire for utilitarian spaces that please the eye, and outdoor entertainment areas that include a dining room and cooking and refrigeration capabilities.

Originality counts too. “No more cookie-cutter houses,” 70% of the participants said. They strongly prefer homes with character and charm.

Sun rooms (36%), extra-large front porches (35%) and oversized laundry rooms (34%) topped the desire for home offices, exercise rooms, playrooms and wine cellars.
