The Bible says the last shall be first, but does the first have to be last? “3:10 to Yuma” was the first of this fall’s remarkable crop of fine films, but it has almost gotten lost in the succeeding shuffle. Which is too bad, because this remake of the 1957 classic should not be missed. The formidable Russell Crowe stars as a charismatic outlaw and Christian Bale plays the downtrodden rancher who crosses his path. Yes, the western tropes are familiar, but James Mangold directs it all with such energy and passion it’s as if he didn’t know it’s all been done before.
