Weir (68) leads by one at Kapalua

Mike Weir finally got one last birdie putt to fall, and it was enough to put him in the lead Saturday at the Mercedes-Benz Championship at Kapalua, Hawaii.

Weir, who missed three consecutive birdie chances inside 10 feet on the back nine, hit a deft chip to three feet for birdie on the par-five 18th that gave him a five-under-par 68.

Weir is at 13-under 206 and has a one-shot lead over Nick Watney, who birdied his last two holes for a 67.

Daniel Chopra (67) and Jonathan Byrd (69) were another stroke back.

Berthod wins; Ligety, Miller fail to finish

Marc Berthod led a 1-2 finish for Switzerland in a World Cup giant slalom at Adelboden, Switzerland. He finished in 2 minutes 27.56 seconds, more than a half-second ahead of Daniel Albrecht. Hannes Reichelt of Austria was third, 0.58 behind.

Ted Ligety of Park City, Utah, fell near the start, and Bode Miller of Bretton Woods, N.H., missed a gate during a treacherous first leg that 23 skiers did not complete.

Difficult conditions during the first run caused skiers to lose their footing. Ligety managed to walk off nearly unscathed despite sliding into the restraining fence.

Team officials said Ligety needed treatment on his hip, but he was not seriously injured. Miller tried to continue after missing the gate but gave up when he went out a second time moments later.

The only American to finish was Jimmy Cochran of Keene, N.H., who was 17th.

Denise Karbon of Italy won her fourth consecutive World Cup giant slalom, leading after the first leg and finishing fourth in the second for a combined time of 2 minutes 16.98 seconds at Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic.

Tanja Poutiainen of Finland finished second, 0.39 seconds behind, and Elisabeth Goergl of Austria was third in 2:17.57.

Nicole Hosp, the defending discipline and overall World Cup champion, was fifth. Lindsey Vonn of Vail, Colo., finished 11th.

Tatjana Huefner led a German sweep of the top four spots in a women’s luge event at Koenigssee, Germany, for her fourth consecutive World Cup victory. She was timed in 1 minute 34.662 seconds, setting a track-record 47.262 in the second heat

TENNIS

Murray beats Wawrinka for Qatar Open title

Third-seeded Andy Murray defeated Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, to win the Qatar Open at Doha, his first tournament since splitting with coach Brad Gilbert. It was Murray’s fourth ATP tour title, but his first hard-court title.

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal was extended to three tiebreakers before defeating third-seeded Carlos Moya, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (8), 7-6 (1), to advance to the final of the Chennai Open in India.

He will play fourth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny, who beat Marin Cilic, 6-2, 6-3. Nadal saved four match points in the second-set tiebreaker.

Third-seeded Jarkko Nieminen beat sixth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the final of the Adelaide International in Australia. He will play Michael Llodra, who beat wild-card entrant Joe Sirianni, 6-3, 7-6 (8).

Manchester United beats Aston Villa in FA Cup

Wayne Rooney was on the field for only 11 minutes but helped Manchester United to a 2-0 FA Cup victory over Aston Villa in a game watched by England’s new coach, Fabio Capello.

Entering as a substitute with the score 0-0, Rooney began the move that led to Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal on Ryan Giggs’ cross at the far post in the 81st minute.

Then with a minute left, Rooney found Ronaldo with a crossing pass. When Ronaldo’s shot was blocked, Rooney was in position to score from 20 yards.

BASKETBALL

Pippen helps Finnish team extend streak

Former NBA star Scottie Pippen scored nine points to help Finland league leader Torpan Pojat defeat Honka, 98-85, at Vantaa. He also had nine rebounds.

Torpan Pojat has won 19 in a row in the Finnish league. Pippen scored 12 points in his first game Friday, ToPo’s 93-81 victory over Porvoo.

MISCELLANY

Malignaggi beats Ngoudjo to keep IBF title

Paulie Malignaggi successfully defended his International Boxing Federation junior-welterweight title with a unanimous decision over Herman Ngoudjo at Bally’s Atlantic City Hotel Casino.

Malignaggi (24-1) received scores of 117-111, 116-113 and 115-113. Ngoudjo is 16-2.

Terrelle Pryor scored on a six-yard run and also threw a touchdown pass to lead the East high school team to a 33-23 victory over the West in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl All-Star game at San Antonio.

In another high school all-star game, Kyle Parker threw a late four-yard touchdown pass to Jamie Harper to help the Silver beat the Red, 17-14, in the Under Armour All-America Game at Orlando, Fla.
