A wound, not just a bruise

CHRISTOPHER Knight’s otherwise excellent observations about Eli Broad’s commitment issues [“Change of Heart, Change of Fortune,” Jan. 11] failed to draw what I think is the obvious conclusion: The injury to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is not simply a “bruise,” it is a wound that may be fatal.

THE poor thing. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is now just another piece of Broad kill.

WHAT a wonderful thing Eli Broad is doing by not giving his personal art collection to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. If his program becomes what he wishes, it will be shown in art galleries all over the world, to view and enjoy, even arriving back here in Los Angeles from time to time. His gift of the building is very generous in itself. When is enough enough?

L.A. has been sucker-punched by Eli Broad, of all people. The gratitude that we all feel for his illustrious leadership in the arts in our city will live on, but so will the sting of this blow that is all the more painful because it is inexplicable.
