A federal appeals court refused to throw out lengthy prison sentences for two jailed U.S. Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting an unarmed illegal immigrant near El Paso and lying about it.

The U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans upheld most of the convictions against Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean.

Ramos and Compean were convicted in 2006 and sentenced to 11 and 12 years in prison, respectively, for the February 2005 shooting of illegal immigrant and admitted drug smuggler Osvaldo Aldrete Davila. Both claimed they shot Davila in self-defense.
