WHERE IS THE ART?

Re “Looking at the City in a New Light, and Seeing What Develops,” about the Sigmar Berg photography show “Developed Views II” [June 5]:
I understand that, in this increasingly digital world, the media of artistic expression have changed dramatically. But I find it both amazing and disturbing that Berg has self-confessed to utilizing the crutch of digital technology in the “development” of his photography.
Using a digital camera and digital retouching seems to me to take the artistry out of photography. I might feel differently if I saw something in his subject matter worthy of praise, but let’s face it: Urban landscapes and coastal views aren’t far off from what we might find in a beginners’ junior high photography class.
What this article says to me is that I could take photos from my iPhone, tinker with them on Photoshop, print them on canvas and boom -- I’m the next hip photographer.
