Typhoon Fengshen, lashing the Philippines for a second day today, has killed at least 80 people as it submerged communities and capsized a ferry carrying more than 740 passengers and crew members.

Rescue vessels aborted one attempt to get to the ferry, which sank about two miles offshore, but efforts resumed in stormy weather today.

“So far, we have only found four dead, no survivors,” said Eleandro Madrona, a local congressman. “You can only see the bow of the ship now. It’s already down in the water.”

The MV Princess of Stars stalled in rough seas Saturday near Sibuyan Island after Fengshen, with winds gusting up to 120 mph, ripped through the archipelago.

The typhoon roared through Manila early today.
