U.S. has lost its moorings
Re “America isn’t over,” Opinion, June 15
Ted Widmer’s article spins a hopeful concept that new leadership drawing on our guiding principles might allow America to regain its global mantle of freedom and leadership.
Although Widmer points out the obvious -- a morally and financially bankrupt government resulting from President Bush’s (mis)management -- he tiptoes around the true Bush legacy: The systematic destruction of our democracy’s foundations and guiding principles, 200 years in the making.
Skipping ahead to when the U.S. might again become a global purveyor of morality, democracy, trade and power is where Widmer misses the base. A house with no foundation cannot stand.
