Scruggs’ son pleads guilty to felony

The last defendant in the bribery case that brought down attorney Richard “Dickie” Scruggs -- his son -- pleaded guilty in Oxford in a deal with federal prosecutors that could keep him out of prison.
Zach Scruggs, 33, pleaded guilty to knowing about a felony but not reporting it. He, his father and three others were originally charged with conspiring to bribe a judge in a dispute over $26.5 million in legal fees from a settlement of Hurricane Katrina insurance lawsuits.
Scruggs admitted having knowledge of an attempt to improperly influence the judge, but not specifically of a bribe.
The felony carries a three-year prison sentence, but prosecutors recommended probation.
His father faces up to five years in prison in the case.
