Shining Path rebels working with drug traffickers killed one police officer and wounded 11 on an anti-drug patrol in Peru’s coca-producing Apurimac River valley, a police chief said.

A female officer, 21, died of a gunshot to the head Sunday, Gen. Miguel Hidalgo, chief of Peru’s anti-drug police, told the Canal 7 news program.

Police have been attacked frequently since a group stormed a police station near a drug-trafficking route in Apurimac in November, killing a police lieutenant.
