Mother will not fight extradition
A fugitive and mother of three who escaped from a Detroit-area prison 32 years ago has waived her right to fight extradition and probably will be sent to Michigan in the next 10 days, officials said Thursday.
Susan Lefevre, 53, who is now in custody, will be taken directly to a prison across the street from where she escaped in 1976 after serving one year of a 10- to 20-year sentence on drug charges. There is no requirement for an additional court proceeding, said Russ Marlan, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections.
Like all prisoners, Lefevre can appeal to the governor for a pardon, Marlan said. Lefevre’s attorney in Michigan has told reporters that he plans to seek a pardon based on Lefevre’s lack of criminality during her decades as a fugitive.
Lefevre has lived in San Diego for more than a decade under the name Marie Walsh. She and her husband, Alan Walsh, an executive with the Waste Management trash-hauling firm, have three grown children.
Michigan officials learned that Lefevre was living in San Diego through an anonymous tip, officials said.
