Military deaths

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel who have died in Afghanistan, Djibouti, Iraq and in the United States while home on leave:

Jeffrey A. Ammon, 37, of Orem, Utah; lieutenant, Navy. Ammon was killed Tuesday when an improvised explosive device detonated near him in Afghanistan’s Aband district. The nuclear submarine engineer was working with the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ghazni, southwest of Kabul. He was attached to Commander Navy Region Northwest in Bangor, Wash.

William J. L. Cooper, 22, of Eupora, Miss.; corporal, Marine Corps. Cooper was killed in combat Monday in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, southwest of Kabul. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Jeffrey F. Deprimo, 35, of Pittston, Pa.; first lieutenant, Army National Guard. Deprimo was killed Tuesday when his Humvee struck a roadside bomb in Ghazni, Afghanistan, southwest of Kabul. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 103rd Armor Regiment in Williamsport, Pa.

Branden P. Haunert, 21, of Cincinnati; private, Army. Haunert was killed May 18 when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Tikrit, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Howard A. Jones Jr., 35, of Chicago; private first class, Army. Jones was killed May 18 by a hit-and-run driver in Chicago while home on leave from the war in Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Riley, Kan.

Joseph A. Moore, 54, of Boise, Idaho; lieutenant colonel, Air National Guard. Moore died of natural causes Tuesday in the African nation of Djibouti. The Air Force chaplain was ministering to troops as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was assigned to the Idaho Air National Guard’s 124th Wing at Gowen Field, Idaho.

Davy N. Weaver, 39, of Barnesville, Ga.; master sergeant, Army National Guard. Weaver was killed May 18 when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Qalat, Afghanistan, southwest of Kabul. He was assigned to the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Macon, Ga.
