Re “Five on Eight,” Opinion, Nov. 1

What did same-sex marriage opponent Maggie Gallagher mean when she wrote: “But if we want fathers to be there for children ... biology alone will not take us very far. We need a cultural mechanism to connect fathers to the mother- child bond”?

Does she mean that men feel no “biological” love (whatever that is) for their children? That the only reason men stay with their families is because marriage makes them do so? That men would not love their children if they weren’t married to their mothers?

In what sad world does Gallagher live?
