Here’s a deal they shouldn’t refuse

In regard to the Detroit automakers’ bailout request (“GM, low on cash, seeks aid,” Nov. 8), might I suggest this could be the ideal time for the administration and Congress to tell Detroit:

“Here’s the deal. We will assist you. What we want is a guarantee for the development and sale of 250,000 electric cars (or other non-fossil fuel engine autos). We will assure you that the government is prepared to buy a percentage of those developed so that you can be assured of making a profit on this line.”

This, of course, is in addition to the standard interest on the debt as well as an option of equity. Detroit’s woes create the perfect time for the government to start weaning Americans off fossil fuels and off foreign oil.
