Re “ Parents’ despair is left at Nebraska’s doorstep,” Nov. 21

Melyssa Cowburn’s story broke my heart.

Amid all the bad news about the economy, this was worse. Forget about the value of my retirement account. When good people adopt troubled children and try to help -- but end up attempting suicide or abandoning those children -- we ought to step in as a society, as a community and as a nation.

If we don’t, we are morally bankrupt, whatever the size of our GNP.
