From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The University of Minnesota has concluded that falsified data were used in a 2001 article published by one of its researchers that suggested adult stem cells could be used as an alternative to embryonic stem cells in medical research. The school is asking that the article be retracted.

An investigation into research published by Dr. Catherine Verfaillie cleared her but pointed to a former graduate student, Dr. Morayma Reyes, for altering data by adjusting brightness and contrast in images used in the article. Reyes said that was an accepted practice at the time.
