Tensions rise over Mugabe appointees
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe swore in two vice presidents despite a deadlock in power-sharing talks with the opposition movement, heightening the tensions threatening to unravel the negotiations.
The opposition called the swearing-in ceremony an act of bad faith. The move also was condemned by the European Union.
The new vice presidents are Joyce Mujuru and Joseph Msika. The power-sharing agreement gave those posts to Mugabe’s party, but the opposition said the president should not have gone ahead while the overall deal has not be completed.
