Re “GM, Chrysler said to be considering partnership,” Oct. 12

It was inevitable that Detroit automakers would consider consolidation through merger -- the reported talks between General Motors and Chrysler are not surprising. Yet I wonder if the public fully understands the ramifications of such talks and what they ultimately mean for the automotive industry in North America.

There is no question there are too many brands competing in the market. But merger not only means the elimination of brands but the closing of factories and the loss of jobs -- many, many jobs.

Entire manufacturing towns in Michigan would be decimated by such a merger, but the inevitability of it makes that a moot point. It will happen because it must happen.
