Times Wire Reports

Brazil’s ruling party lost its chance to retake control of Sao Paulo, and an ex-guerrilla who once kidnapped a U.S. ambassador failed in his bid to become mayor of Rio de Janeiro.

Sao Paulo Mayor Gilberto Kassab of the conservative Democrat Party won reelection in a second round of voting.

In Rio, former guerrilla Fernando Gabeira of the Green Party lost to Eduardo Paes by less than 2 percentage points. In 1969, Gabeira helped kidnap Ambassador Charles Burke Elbrick, who was released unhurt.
