Re: Michael Hiltzik’s business column “Whitman’s edge may be a desire to see CEO run state,” Feb. 16:

Oh good, another amateur to our rescue. There are probably a million Californians capable of creating a workable budget for the state if they were in the position of chief executive of California.

However, the coming vacancy is that of governor. It is from this position that an acceptable budget must come. The process requires the coaxing and cajoling of a group of legislators who have little motivation to work cooperatively with a governor who can neither fire nor promote them.

Being CEO of a corporation in no way prepares anyone for this task.
