In his review of “Ella” [“The Elemental ‘Ella,’ ” Feb. 24], Charles McNulty states that “As far as dramatic characters go, Ella can seem rather bland in her relentless niceness. What made her special was her art, not her life.”

I worked with two gentlemen who delivered furniture to Ella’s house on several occasions. They said that each time they made a delivery, Ella would offer them sandwiches (which she would make), dessert and refreshments, asking them about their work and families and making them feel as though they were special guests in her home, ending their visit with a sizable tip.

If that isn’t a special life, I’m at a loss for a definition.
