WORLD BRIEFING / IRAQ

Times Wire Reports

Gunmen shot and killed eight members of a family, six of them women, in an overnight raid on their home in Diyala province.

Attackers then abducted two other family members, a man and woman, from the house in the village of Maamil, about 55 miles north of Baghdad.

Police said they did not know why the Sunni Arab family, which was living in a largely Shiite Muslim neighborhood, had been targeted a week before provincial elections.
