When asked what they would do if they ran the NEA [“If I Ran the NEA,” March 1], both Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Tom Hayden stated they would model the NEA after the Works Progress Administration created by Franklin D. Roosevelt to help end the Great Depression.

As a history teacher in a community college, I always remind my students that the best way to end a recession is for the government to create jobs.

The WPA not only built much-needed roads, bridges and dams but also hired unemployed writers, artists and composers to beautify the nation and enlighten Americans. For example, the Oral History Project to interview former slaves began under the WPA.

I’m so pleased that Hayden and Abdul-Jabbar remember what they learned in their history classes.
