WORLD BRIEFING / NORTH KOREA

Times Wire Reports

North Koreans voted in controlled polls that analysts say will help start the process of grooming a successor to Kim Jong Il to lead the reclusive country at loggerheads with Washington over its nuclear program.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that 67-year-old Kim, thought to have suffered a stroke in August, has named his youngest son, Kim Jong Un, as his successor.

Quoting unidentified sources, it said Kim Jong Un was running in the parliamentary election.
