Tough on Bush

Re “Bush’s big lies,” Opinion, March 5

Rosa Brooks just can’t let up. She dusts off the so-called Big Lie theory to accuse former President Bush of everything short of the Black Dahlia murder. Federal appellate courts have upheld most of Bush’s policies, including the holding without benefit of counsel of people captured beyond our borders while attempting to kill Americans or American allies.

Brooks would prefer to see lawyers armed with affidavits crawling all over the mountains of Afghanistan or the deserts of Iraq searching for witnesses and clues. She should be reminded that the first World Trade Center bombing was followed by the second, despite the fact that a handful of people were duly tried and convicted. Meanwhile, we have seen no attacks on American soil since 9/11.

For all of his faults, history will probably judge Bush very differently. Let’s not forget that Harry Truman was called a country bumpkin and an incompetent stumblebum, but has made a remarkable comeback.
