Use gift wisely

The late Bruce Lindsay was a fixture at Vanguard University. In the late 1970s, when the school was still called Southern California College, Bruce was easy to spot. He was that mysterious middle-aged person who often ate dinner with us, dispensed wisdom, and yet made one wonder how he had so much time to hang around the campus. Your front-page article has answered that nagging question.

This self-made millionaire, a true child of the Great Depression, leaves at an ironic time. Having so little at the start of his life, Lindsay apparently has bequeathed his hard-earned money to a debt-ridden educational institution foundering in the midst of what seems to be an extremely difficult recession.

One can only pray that Vanguard will use his gift to build for the future (build a new dining commons) instead of tossing away most of the money to pay off the financial wolves (the very same bankers Lindsay tried to avoid all his life) who are encircling the school.
