Bank of America Corp. Chief Executive Kenneth D. Lewis said Friday that he welcomed the leadership of the man who succeeded him as chairman after shareholders voted this week to split the chairman and CEO jobs.

Lewis, who was chairman and CEO from 2001 until Wednesday, said in a memo to employees that he would work with Walter E. Massey, former president of Morehouse College in Atlanta, to “drive our company forward.”

A spokesman declined to comment on the memo.
