Re “A Latina in the middle,” May 27

Whether you are liberal or conservative, I think we can all agree that Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court, did something no other judge has done -- she saved the sport of baseball.

In fact, because of her ruling, my brother named our fantasy baseball league in her honor.

So congratulations on your nomination, Judge Sotomayor. And good luck with the confirmation process. We will be honored to change our league’s name to the Justice Sotomayor League.

With his nomination of Sotomayor, Obama has indicated that when it comes to application of the law, some people are more equal than others. Take, for example, the case of the firefighters in the city of New Haven, Conn.

Sotomayor’s nomination shows that Obama values the politics of ethnicity and “empathy” over equality.

In so doing, he has made a mockery not only of his and Sotomayor’s accomplishments but also of the “equal protection of the laws” for all Americans.

It’s been a long time since a Supreme Court justice reflected the majority of real, non-elitist Americans.

Like Obama, Sotomayor’s success does not derive from family connections or money; she rose through the ranks on her own merit and hard work. Sotomayor will make both a terrific justice and a tremendous role model.

For too many in the Republican right wing, only a Rush Limbaugh nomination to the Supreme Court would have been satisfactory.
