European Union Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said she was optimistic that she could reach a settlement with Oracle Corp. over its planned $7.4-billion purchase of Sun Microsystems Inc.

The European Commission sent an official complaint to the companies this week, saying the combination of Sun’s MySQL and Oracle’s corporate database software raises antitrust issues.

“Let’s be optimistic,” Kroes told journalists in Brussels when asked whether a sale of MySQL would resolve competition concerns.
