Egyptian officials are scheduled to meet with representatives of the Louvre today to try to resolve a dispute over what Egypt contends are stolen artifacts. In the meantime, however, Egypt says it will not allow archaeological expeditions connected to the French museum to work in the country.
“The Louvre Museum refused to return four archaeological reliefs to Egypt that were stolen during the 1980s from the tomb of the noble Tetaki,” near the famed temple city of Luxor, said a statement quoting Supreme Council of Antiquities head Zahi Hawass.
The Louvre has said the museum is open to returning the artifacts demanded by Egypt, though the decision has to be made by a special committee. France’s Culture Ministry also said it is ready to return the pieces if the committee approves.
