Bringing the outdoors in
A contemporary design with open spaces brings the outdoors in with sliding glass floor-to-ceiling pocket doors at this newly constructed Cheviot Hills home.
Designed by Brett Davis, an architect with Ikoniko in Los Angeles, the home was a collaborative effort with Blanchard-Becker Contemporary, a design, development and builder team in West Los Angeles.
“We tore down a one-story 1947 tract home and decided to build a contemporary-style house, which is our architectural passion,” said Ann Blanchard, who bought the lot with her husband, Sandy Becker. “We felt there was a glut of Tuscan and Mediterranean houses in the area.”
Cheviot Hills, a Westside neighborhood south of Century City, began as a residential development in the 1920s.
Tree-lined streets and rolling knolls have made the area popular for families, celebrities and entertainment industry workers seeking homes near the Fox Studios.
The house, which sits on a lot elevated from the street, has four levels. A small foyer at the entrance leads up one level to a living room with large, angular picture windows and a fireplace.
More steps lead to the main level, with the kitchen, dining room and family room, which opens onto an outdoor living area and the backyard.
The kitchen features walnut cabinetry, built-in pantry drawers and Bosch appliances. A Spanish Sile- stone island for food preparation has a sliding bar table on one side.
Off the dining room is an office that opens to an outdoor deck. Next to the office is a laundry room, and at the end of the hallway is a guest bedroom and bathroom.
The second floor features a media room pre-wired for home theater use. Glass pocket doors open to a deck that wraps around part of the house, creating a balcony walkway to two bedrooms and their accompanying bathrooms. A third bedroom and bathroom are across the hall.
On the other side of the media room is the master suite, which also opens to an outdoor deck. Back-to-back closet/storage units divide a portion of the master bedroom for dressing space, leading to the master bathroom.
The master bath features Carrera marble floors, a trapezoid-shaped tub and separate shower.
