Previews by August Brown St. Vincent Annie Clark’s album “Actor” was an alternately whimsical yet deadly insightful record of off-kilter indie rock with rich flourishes from a closet full of gadgets. Her guitar playing, though, is always front and center, and let it be known she’s a ripper of the highest caliber. El Rey Theatre, 5515 Wilshire Blvd., L.A. Tue., 8 p.m. $16. (323) 936-4790.

Editors The U.K. band’s latest, “In This Light and on This Evening,” got panned a bit for its exceedingly dour synthesizers and moodier tempos. Don’t believe the haters; it’s an immersive, textured work that, if lyrically goofy at times, is a worthy update of their Joy Division-for-the-masses danceable post-punk. The Wiltern, 3790 Wilshire Blvd., L.A. Thu., 7 p.m. $22.50. (213) 380-5005.

Meshell Ndegeocello The ever-inventive bass virtuoso takes on a night of cover songs rooted in the deep soul and fringey experimentalism that have defined her sound for years. Largo at the Coronet, 366 N. La Cienega Blvd., L.A. Thu., 8 p.m. $30. (310) 855-0350.
