If your Toyota accelerates out of control

Share

Brake with both feet: Step on the brake pedal with both feet, using firm and steady pressure. Do not pump the pedal because that would deplete the vacuum used for the power brake assist.

Shift to neutral:

While still braking, shift the transmission to the

neutral position.

Or turn off the engine:

If unable to put the vehicle in neutral, turn the engine off. This will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but the power assist to these systems will be lost.

* With a key ignition, turn the ignition key one click to the ACC position to turn off the engine. Be careful not to turn it all the way to the locked position. Do not remove the key from the ignition because that would lock the steering wheel.

* With a push-button ignition, press the “engine start/stop” button for at least three seconds, firmly and steadily, to turn off the engine. Do not tap the button.

Pull over: Use the brakes to make a controlled stop at the side of the road. Then turn off the engine or keep it off.
