U.S. sprinters regain 2000 relay medals

Share

American sprinters who were stripped of their 2000 Olympics relay medals because teammate Marion Jones was doping won an appeal Friday to have them restored.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport in Geneva ruled in favor of the women, who had appealed the International Olympic Committee’s decision to disqualify them from the Sydney Games.

The court said the IOC and International Assn. of Athletics Federations rules in 2000 did not allow entire teams to be disqualified because of doping by one athlete.

The IOC said the ruling was “disappointing and especially unfortunate for the athletes of the other teams who competed according to the rules.”

Heat signs centers Anthony, Pittman

Once Mike Miller’s deal with Miami finally was completed, the Heat moved quickly to add other pieces to its dramatically changed roster.

The Heat landed a pair of centers, re-signing restricted free agent Joel Anthony and also signing second-round draft pick Dexter Pittman from Texas.

Next up: Miami is getting set to add more big men.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas agreed to join the Heat on Tuesday and may be signed by Saturday, and Miami is also closing in on adding veteran forward Juwan Howard.

The Boston Celtics have agreed in principle with guard Nate Robinson on a new contract, a team official told the Associated Press.

The Boston Herald reported that Robinson will get $4 million a year for two seasons.

The agent for Ronnie Brewer confirmed that the guard agreed to a three-year contract with Chicago.

The deal reunites Brewer with former Utah teammates Carlos Boozer and Kyle Korver.

Brewer finished last season with Memphis after being dealt from Utah at the trade deadline in February.

Packers’ Jolly is suspended for season

The NFL suspended Green Bay Packers defensive end Johnny Jolly without pay for the upcoming season and perhaps beyond for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Jolly’s suspension begins immediately and will continue through at least the 2010 season. He will be eligible to apply for reinstatement after the Super Bowl.

Jolly is facing drug charges in Houston because of his July 2008 arrest outside a club for possession of at least 200 grams of codeine. If convicted, Jolly faces up to 20 years in prison.

Seattle Seahawks safety Kevin Ellison has a court date of Oct. 5 after pleading not guilty in Torrance to drug possession.

A court clerk confirmed that Ellison, who played for USC, entered the plea Wednesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court. He remains free on $10,000 bail.

The two, bidding for their first win on the PGA Tour, are two strokes ahead of John Mallinger, who shot a 67 and is third at 136.
