POP MUSIC

Jonathan Richman For more than three decades, the wry tunesmith with a Rocky Balboa drawl and an observant eye has maintained a cult following — first as leader of the Modern Lovers, whose lovesick Bostonian proto-punk has been credited with pioneering the genre, then through appearances on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” and “There’s Something About Mary,” not to mention a steady stream of solo releases in the ‘90s and ‘00s. Catch him at the Smell with perennial sideman, drummer Tommy Larkins. 8 p.m. The Smell, 247 S. Main St., L.A. $15. https://www.thesmell.org.

Massive Attack Robert “3-D” Del Naja and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall, collectively known as Massive Attack, are wizards in the studio, crafting glitchy, ominous trip-hop and enlisting guest singers to give voice to their murky compositions. Outside the studio, the duo expands into a dynamic live band. Martina Topley Bird, who contributed vocals to the band’s latest album, “Heligoland,” will also perform. The Wiltern, 3790 Wilshire Blvd., L.A. 8 p.m. $43.50-$48.50. (213) 388-1400. https://www.wiltern.com.

Roky Erickson The psychedelic pioneer and 13th Floor Elevators co-founder has had his ups and downs — including a stint in Rusk State Hospital for the Criminally Insane — but he’s back at the top of his game in 2010. His first album in 14 years, “True Love Cast Out All Evil,” debuted in April, backed by his current touring band alt-folk rockers Okkervil River. The Music Box, 6126 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood. 8 p.m. $30. (213) 746-4674. https://www.clubmayan.com.

BOOKS

Chuck Palahniuk The patron saint of disaffected college-age men, Palahniuk has almost single-handedly conjured a new genre of knowing, probing tough-guy fiction, most famously in “Fight Club.” Here, he reads from his new novel “Tell-All,” which unexpectedly documents the life of playwright Lillian Hellman as a kind of proto-feminist superhero. Largo, 366 N. La Cienega Blvd., L.A. Call venue for time and price. (310) 855-0350. https://www.largo-la.com.
