Good or bad, it’s all Shareece Wright

It was ecstasy, agony, ecstasy, agony — then a final dose of ecstasy and agony — for USC cornerback Shareece Wright during USC’s 24-21 victory over Arizona on Saturday night.

On a first-quarter blitz, Wright stripped the ball from Arizona quarterback Nick Foles while recording a sack. Defensive tackle DaJohn Harris recovered the ball for the Trojans, setting up Matt Barkley’s touchdown pass to Rhett Ellison that gave the Trojans a 14-0 lead.

However, Wright then got beat by Arizona receiver Travis Cobb for a 31-yard touchdown late in the second quarter. The play pulled the Wildcats to within 21-14.

Early in the third quarter, Wright recovered a fumble that was forced by linebacker Malcolm Smith. The play set up a drive that culminated with Joe Houston’s 30-yard field goal late in the third quarter.

In the game’s final minutes, Wright was beat by Arizona’s David Douglas, who made a diving catch in the end zone. Then, on the point-after, Wright scooped up a kick blocked by Matt Kalil and was on his way to a two-point runback when the play was blown dead because of a defensive penalty.

Wright had lined up offside. Given a second chance, Arizona kicker Alex Zendejas made the kick, but the Trojans held on.

Out of the Woods

Robert Woods came back strong from the injury and illness that slowed him in last week’s game against Arizona State.

The freshman from Gardena Serra High looked like his familiar self against Arizona, catching a game-high eight passes for 41 yards and returning three kickoffs for 64 yards.

Woods caught only three passes last week after being hospitalized a few days before the game. Woods had suffered a bone bruise in his back against Oregon, and the pain was exacerbated by repeated vomiting.

Goal tending

USC quarterback Matt Barkley said this week that his goal was to finish the season without any more interceptions.

The sophomore lost that in the third quarter when a pass to Jordan Cameron bounced off the tight end’s hands and fell into the arms of Arizona safety Adam Hall.

It was the third consecutive game that Barkley had at least one pass intercepted.

Mustain comes through

One of the key plays of the first half for USC came on fourth and four at Arizona’s 11-yard line.

The Trojans lined up as if they were going to kick a field goal, but holder Mitch Mustain instead remained standing and took the snap. Mustain then passed to Cameron for a seven-yard gain and a first down.

Quick kicks

The Trojans are now 27-7 against Arizona. The Trojans have not lost at Arizona Stadium since 1999.
