Jamie Dimon thought Tom Brady call was a prank by Lloyd Blankfein

NEW YORK -- After JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s embarrassing “London Whale” losses came to light, Chairman and Chief Executive Jamie Dimon reportedly got a phone call to cheer him up.

The voice on the line claimed to be Tom Brady, star quarterback of the New England Patriots and San Mateo native.

Dimon initially thought it could be the chairman and CEO of rival Goldman Sachs, another Wall Street powerhouse, according to Dimon’s remarks quoted by Bloomberg News.

“At first I thought it was a friend of mine pulling a prank. I thought it was Lloyd Blankfein,” Dimon said during a panel discussion in Germany Monday, according to the financial news service.

It apparently was actually Brady on the call, which has been previously reported.

“I was surprised he even knew who I was, to tell you the truth,” Dimon told Vanity Fair last year.

The losses in question stemmed from risky derivatives bets made by a trader nicknamed the London Whale. The bets, which came to light in May 2012, wound up costing the bank about $6 billion and caused a firestorm on Capitol Hill as it renewed debates over Washington’s efforts to rein in excessive risk-taking on Wall Street.

Dimon’s comments about Brady’s call came during a discussion in which he called for moves to make sure no large bank’s failure could threaten to bring down the financial system.

“We’ve got to get rid of ‘too big to fail,’ ” Bloomberg quoted Dimon as saying. “We have to ensure big banks can be taken down without harming the public and at no cost to them.”
