Before President Joe Biden recently announced the U.S. border with Mexico was basically shutting down to nearly all migrants seeking asylum. San Diego County had already become the most popular destination for migrants illegally entering the United States.

But it’s not just the number of migrants crossing into California that’s new, it’s also where those migrants are from.

L.A. Times Mexico City bureau chief Patrick McDonnell told Lisa McRee about the major shift at our southern border.
