The Presidential Medal of Freedom was presented by President Barack Obama today to 16 Americans, including former President Bill Clinton, civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, television icon Oprah Winfrey, and country music legend Loretta Lynn. Former President John F. Kennedy established the award 50 years ago to honor those who have made meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.
