Best and worst: People’s Choice Awards 2011

Awards shows like this are nothing but expanded commercials for pretty much everything, so it’s a bit of a mystery as to why Queen Latifah’s announcement that this year’s ceremony would forego envelopes in favor of the winners’ names printed on Sanyo Zio smart phones (shown with presenter Mila Kunis) left the audience audibly disgruntled. Are the people Luddites at heart?

Winning is winning

Meanwhile, “House” costar Lisa Edelstein was charmingly giddy after winning the award for favorite TV actress. She brought out her iPhone to snap a pic of the crowd, then actually took out a prepared acceptance speech while gushing, “I’ve never won an award before!” Bag all you want on the People’s Choice Awards -- it’s a whole different game when you win one.  (Matt Sayles / Associated Press)

The end is near
