Twilight stars: Robert Pattinson versus Taylor Lautner
By Emily Christianson and Jevon Phillips, Los Angeles Times staff writers
Robert Pattinson. Taylor Lautner. Team Edward versus Team Jacob. Vampire versus werewolf. As their characters battle over Bella, fans are lining up on both sides (most wanting to be Bella). But to which side should we pledge our allegiance?
The actors are friends, but as they will go their separate ways after the two “Breaking Dawn” movies, we may as well introduce a little healthy competition into the relationship. With a few criteria, we even choose a winner. (John W. Adkisson / Los Angeles Times)
“Twilight” fans young and old are taking sides when it comes to the saga’s supernatural rivals. Divided by their love of brooding vamps and beefcake werewolves, fans created Team Edward and Team Jacob.
Winner: Based on nonscientific evidence available on the Internet, Team Edward takes the win, but that shouldn’t stop fans from rooting for the underdog. (Chris Pizzello / Associated Press)
There isn’t much competition here. The actors both released their first big movies in 2005. Pattinson had “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” which raked in close to $300 million. Lautner had “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl,” a successful kids’ flick that nearly hit $40 million.
Winner: According to Box Office Mojo, Pattinson’s eight film roles, from “Potter” to “Water for Elephants,” have grossed more than $1.4 billion; Lautner’s have earned $1 billion. (Warner Bros.)
Pattinson’s wild, no fuss hair was the talk of Tinseltown when “Twilight” opened in 2008. Since then, he’s shaved his head, cut his hair and even dyed it for film roles, but nothing compares to his typical greasy, unruly do. Of course, Lautner drew the short straw, making his “Twilight” debut in a bad wig.
Winner: Lautner looks good with his cropped cut, but he would need to turn up the volume to compete with Pattinson. (Summit Entertainment)
Pattinson gets props for dropping his English accent to play Edward Cullen, but that doesn’t come close to Lautner’s total transformation. The teen heartthrob was the perfect pick to play Bella’s young pal Jacob in “Twilight,” but there was talk of replacing him once Jacob began his evolution from runt to hard body in the future films. Instead, Lautner stepped it up in a big way, revealing (over and over in shirtless scenes in “New Moon”) that he deserved to keep the role.
Winner: Lautner. His abs say it all. (Summit Entertainment)
Robert Pattinson’s next two films, “Bel Ami” and “Cosmopolis,” have some star power, with Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman and Paul Giamatti among the cast members. He’ll play a womanizer and a millionaire, respectively.
Lautner’s project in development, “Stretch Armstrong,” could be the prize of his future endeavors. The teen idol would play a real-life version of the superhero Hasbro toy.
Winner: Pattinson is steadier, but for his current fans, Lautner takes this. “Stretch Armstrong”? Come on, that sounds like fun! (Kevin Winter / Getty Images)
It looks like these two Twi-hard magnets make tough competition for each other, even in real life. Pattinson took three points for Team Edward, box office gross and hot hair, while Lautner won commitment to the craft, secret girlfriends and future projects. (Summit Entertainment)
