If cold weather makes you want to hole up with a few cocktails in the evening, then it also likely makes you want to clear up in the morning with a savory Bloody Mary. Bad store-bought mixes can get you down, so make your own courtesy of Mike Johnston, the founder of Savory Spice Shop, which stocks more than 400 herbs, sauces and spices.

Mike’s Super Thick Bloody Mary Mix by Mike Johnston

11/2 teaspoons horseradish powder

1/4 cup tomato powder

3 cups cold water

1 teaspoon black pepper

4 teaspoons Cambridgeshire celery seasoning, divided

1 lime, cut into 8 equal slices, divided

4-5 dashes Angostura bitters

1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce

1/2 teaspoon crushed dill weed

3-4 tablespoons A-1 steak sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

Combine horseradish powder with 1 teaspoon water and stir to a thick paste; set aside. Combine tomato powder with cold water in a pitcher and whisk until thoroughly blended, add pepper, 11/2 teaspoons celery seasoning, juice of 2 slices of lime, then all the remaining ingredients including the horseradish paste. Pour from pitcher to pitcher until thoroughly blended. Salt and pepper to taste.

Rim chilled glasses with remaining celery seasoning, add ice, vodka or gin, and Bloody Mary mix and stir. Garnish with a sausage cube, olives and a lime.
