Ask any pre-teen girl and they’ll tell you Kristen Stewart has it made -- she clinched the coveted role of Bella in the blockbuster “Twilight” franchise, after all. But long before she was cast in the vampire romance, Hollywood had already taken note. From her breakthrough role opposite Jodie Foster in “Panic Room” to her nuanced performance in Sean Penn’s “Into the Wild,” we look back at Stewart’s standout roles. (Carolyn Cole / Los Angeles Times)

Trapped! Stewart starred opposite Jodie Foster in this 2002 thriller about a mother and her 11-year-old daughter who become imprisoned in their home when intruders break in. The role won her early accolades, including this one from Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers, who wrote, “Foster and Stewart -- in a nuanced, no-bull turn -- forge a bond that never feels cornball.”

In this kid-friendly flick, Stewart played Maddy, a girl who convinces her two best friends to break into a high-tech bank vault so she can get the money to pay for an operation her dad needs. (Fortunately, she followed this with a role in David Gordon Green’s southern thriller “Undertow,” opposite Jamie Bell.)

Stewart, who played the cranky older sister in this family film, spent more than half the movie being cryogenically frozen. That was probably for the best. The movie only grossed $29 million.

She went blond for Jonathan Kasdan’s Cannes indie, playing the love interest for then-hot “The O.C.” actor Adam Brody.

Stewart was terrorized by dead people in this 2007 horror movie about a family that moves into a sunflower farm in North Dakota only to become embroiled in a murder mystery involving the home’s previous deceased owners.

In Sean Penn’s film, Stewart made the most of her small role as the girl who befriends Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) along his journey to Alaska. The actress sings and plays guitar in the movie -- and someone liked her performance so much that they edited together all her scenes into one eight-minute clip.

“Never have the actress’ soulful eyes and exposed heart worked more in her favor,” wrote Times film critic Betsy Sharkey wrote of Kristen Stewart’s steely portrayal of Snow White. But soon after the release of the dark adaptation of the Grimm fairy tale, news broke that Stewart, who had been publicly dating “Twilight” costar Robert Pattinson, shared a passionate liplock with “Snow White and the Huntsman” director Rupert Sanders. The film, which received a generally warm reception, was eclipsed by the biggest scandal to shake the “Twi-hard” world. As they say, any publicity is good publicity. Talks have already started for a “Snow White” sequel, but no word if Sanders would helm the film. (Universal Pictures)
Stewart has been compelled to take smaller, more challenging roles for the chance to push her talent beyond others’ and her own expectations. She cut her fee to work with “On the Road” director Walter Salles in the spirited and youthful adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s novel. The film will be released on the heels of the final installment of the “Twilight” saga.

Times film critic Betsy Sharkey writes: “With each new film role, her performances continue to deepen; more layers of a complicated interior life are exposed. Stewart treats acting as a craft and one that she is constantly honing, working almost nonstop since she began at age 8 -- 30 roles in 14 years.” (Sundance Selects / IFC)
Kristen Stewart was voted the least sexy Hollywood actress in a poll of British men in February 2013. The poll conducted on behalf of U.K. gadget website MenKind (presumably to lure folks into its selection of Tetris Mood Lights, Zombie Gnomes and Star Wars Jedi Dressing Gowns, items likely to land on a woman’s least-sexy list). (Jay L. All those Chanel fashion shows she attended must have paid off. In December 2013, Kristen Stewart was named the new face of the iconic French fashion house’s Métiers d’Art Paris-Dallas collection campaign, shot by designer and creative director Karl Lagerfeld.
