Coachella by the numbers: Where the U.S. acts come from
- Share via
The 84 American acts performing at Coachella starting Friday are nearly half of the entire 169-artist roster. From a regional standpoint, these bands, DJs and solo artists fall into sadly predictable, if logical, patterns.
To wit: Many of them are from so-called "cultural hubs" such as Los Angeles and New York, places where a convergence of fans, venues, media and business interests draw the masses to relocate.
Thirty-three California acts will make the run from across the state and — along with Portland, Ore.-based STRFKR and Seattle-based the Head and the Heart — confirm a festival devoted to its West Coast roots.
TIMELINE: Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals
New York is sending 18 acts (including two recently announced additions, Julian Casablancas and Nicolas Jaar). Add in the Eastern Seaboard's entries from Maryland (Future Islands, Wye Oak), Pennsylvania (Girl Talk, ZZ Ward, more), Massachusetts (the Pixies) and Virginia (Pharrell), and the result is a festival that mirrors the media's obsession with all things coastal.
Another way of saying this: So-called "flyover" states in the Midwest and South are notably light on this year's roster, with a smattering of Texans (Saints of Valory, Solange), Ohioans (Afghan Whigs), Georgians (OutKast, Neutral Milk Hotel, Washed Out) and others.
