Happy hours: Fall specials

Happy hour used to mean sneaking out of work at 5 p.m., rushing to the neighborhood bar and slurping down a few cheap beer-and-shot combos before eating something greasy and caloric and passing out in front of the TV early because you got your swerve on prematurely. Thanks to the recession, those sorry days are fading fast as quality restaurants and bars begin instituting happy hours that last most of the night, or begin toward the end of an evening. Here are our favorites for the beginning of fall.

The Parish. You’ve got two options for happiness at chef Casey Lane’s new downtown gastropub: 5 to 6:30 p.m. or 11 p.m. to close. During the former, after-work party people can enjoy $2 off the bar’s stellar draft beer list, $2 off all wines and sherries, or a $5 cup of punch created by bar whiz John Coltharp. Late at night you can get crazy with $6 shots of Buffalo Trace and Czech Fernet at the bar.

SHOREbar. For the prime hours between 7 and 10 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday, SHOREbar — the beachside offering from night life heavy hitters John Terzian, Brian Toll and Adam Koral — is offering four $7 specialty drinks, $5 well drinks, half off wine by the glass (and bottle), and $3 PBR, Red Stripe and Amstel Light. This is a particularly bonkers deal because the specialty drinks, which include Dark n Stormy, Moscow Mule, Mesa Mule and Sailor’s Fix, were created by one of the city’s most elite mixologists, Vincenzo Marianella of Copa d’ Oro, and would normally go for double that.

Brühaus. For the German bar Brühaus, October means Oktoberfest and Oktoberfest means lots of beer. From 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday through Oct. 31, Brühaus will serve its Oktoberfest beer, including Spaten, Ayinger and Hofbrau, for $5 alongside a sassy, decidedly un-Teutonic menu featuring inexpensive bites such as buffalo and sweet Sriracha cauliflower ($7) and pastrami egg rolls ($3). In addition, on Sunday nights from 8 p.m. until close you can make Monday morning harder by imbibing in $2 Bud Lights and PBRs and $4 well drinks.
