Weekly obsessions: Memorial Day barbecue essentials
By Melissa Magsaysay
Planning or attending a backyard barbecue this Memorial Day weekend? Even though the affair will be casual, its the start of summer and you want to cover all your bases to look effortlessly chic, even if all youre doing is sitting on a fold-out chair and eating hot dogs. Here are my picks for the most stylish, comfortable, all-day party clothes. Coronas not included.
291 T-shirt in yellow. I know, there are countless tissue-soft T-shirts out there, but Venice-based 291 makes them soft and sturdy. They dont lose their shape and they come in fun, bright colors. 291 T-shirt, $82 www.291venice.com.
My favorite nail polish color for summer is part of Nars Vintage Nail Limited Edition Collection. Hunger is an orange-red shade that looks great with a tan. Nars Hunger Nail Polish, $16 at www.narscosmetics.com.
Denim shorts are ubiquitous, but most people wear them way too short. The 1041 cutoffs from J Brand are a little longer and have side slits, so you can actually move. J Brand 1041 shorts, $141 at Switch Boutique, L.A.
The look may be laid back, but a metallic flat sandal can add some style to casual gear. I love Corso Como sandals because the sole is extra cushiony and supportive. Corso Como Franc sandal, $98 at www.piperlime.com.
Malin & Goetz has teamed up with 10 Cane Rum to create a mojito-flavored lip balm. It sounds wrong, but it’s actually really good. There is just a hint of sweet mojito scent and flavor and once it glides on, that pretty much disappears. It’s the slick texture of this long-lasting lip balm that makes it amazing for an all-day affair. Malin and Goetz-10 Cane Rum Mojito lip balm $12 at www.malinandgoetz.com.
