Moveable Type letterpress truck comes to L.A. for demo, giveaway
The resurgence of letterpress has brought a lot of indie printers to local craft fairs, but Kyle Durrie stands out: She’s got wheels.
Using money raised on Kickstarter -- nearly twice the amount she set as her goal -- the Portland, Ore., native converted a 22-foot-long Chevy step van into the Moveable Type mobile letterpress print shop.
During the last year, Durrie has taken her truck across North America, selling cards and posters at libraries, galleries, street fairs, farms and universities.
Following stints this month in Portland, where Durrie has her Power and Light Press studio, and in Northern California, Durrie will park her truck at the Poketo store in downtown L.A. on Monday for “Type or Treat,” a Halloween-inspired event from 5 to 8 p.m. She will create letterpress prints, masks and trick-or-treat bags based on artworks by Kate Bingaman Burt, Kim West and Michael C. Hsiung. The works will be free.
Poketo is also promising doughnut holes -- including the popular bacon and Fruity Pebbles varieties -- from Cafe Dulce in Little Tokyo. The event is free, but the store is asking people to RSVP via Facebook.
Poketo is at 820 E. 3rd Street.
