Alerted by two explosions minutes earlier, and automatic gunfire outside their hotel, most staffers of the Los Angeles Times’ Baghdad bureau had taken cover when the bomber detonated his vehicle.
Hakim headed the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council and was a top member of the U.S.-appointed Governing Council. He was an ally of both the U.S. and Iran. Hakim died after a battle with lung cancer.
